Sustainability, the foundation for the future.

Sustainability at IDM

Supporting South Tyrol on the path towards greater sustainability

Sustainability is a key focus of our work. We support businesses and partners across South Tyrol by providing guidance, fostering collaboration and offering practical tools that help implement sustainability step by step based on clear criteria. Our activities are aligned with the strategic objectives of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, particularly the South Tyrol Climate Plan 2040.

Our understanding

Sustainability as a process

Sustainability is not a fixed state and not a simple yes-or-no decision. It is a continuous process of improvement. What matters is the implementation of meaningful measures that contribute to sustainability and can be developed further over time. Clear criteria help make progress measurable and provide direction for future action.

Our guiding principles

Our compass

These four guiding principles serve as our operational compass. They define how we put sustainability into practice, both within IDM and in our collaboration with businesses, industry associations and other partners. The focus areas below show where we take concrete action.

  • Integrating sustainability step by step into internal planning and projects
  • Strengthening South Tyrolean businesses in their sustainable transformation by providing guidance and practical support
  • Enabling collaboration through networks and exchange platforms
  • Promoting transparency through fact-based assessment and responsible communication

Our role: how we create impact

Providing guidance

We create transparency around sustainability criteria, standards and emerging developments.

Supporting implementation

We provide tools and programmes that help businesses and partners put sustainability measures into practice.

Building connections

We encourage exchange and collaboration between businesses, institutions and other stakeholders.

South Tyrol Sustainability Label

What is it about?
Assessing sustainability performance using clear criteria and supporting continuous improvement within the respective area being evaluated.

What do we do?
The South Tyrol Sustainability Label provides a standardised framework with clearly defined criteria, transparent processes and independent verification. This ensures clarity about what the label represents and which requirements must be fulfilled.

Mobility

What is it about?
Making travel to and within South Tyrol more sustainable by reducing emissions and easing pressure on sensitive areas. This includes strengthening rail and public transport use, visitor management and promoting low-impact mobility options.

What do we do?
We develop and coordinate measures and partnerships with rail operators, ticketing providers and mobility partners. We support services such as luggage transport and last-mile solutions, contribute to visitor management and hotspot management, and implement communication activities and incentives that encourage sustainable mobility choices.

Circular Economy

What is it about?
Promoting, connecting and scaling circular economy initiatives in South Tyrol, with a focus on resource efficiency and closed material cycles.

What do we do?
Together with stakeholders, we develop frameworks and recommendations, establish partnerships and networks, and initiate pilot projects. We also make knowledge accessible through platforms and information services and support businesses in implementing practical initiatives, particularly in the food, construction and timber sectors.

Greenhouse Gas Accounting

What is it about?
Measuring and understanding emissions systematically in order to identify reduction opportunities. This provides a reliable basis for informed decision-making and transparent communication.

What do we do?
Through the South Tyrol Calculator, we enable companies to prepare a greenhouse gas inventory. We support them in interpreting the results correctly, including methodological considerations and system boundaries, and in identifying suitable next steps to reduce emissions.
